I'm going through the Trek franchise from the beginning, and have just watched The Motion Picture for the first time in 12 or 13 years. As a kid, I pretty much hated this film and almost refused to acknowledge it as a part of the franchise.
For some reason, something clicked this time around and I found myself almost enjoying it. That's not to say it's a fun, exciting film - it's still incredibly slow and quite dull, but it does have a spark that the original cast manage to bring. Spock also gets great character development.
Of course, it also looks incredible thanks to the huge effects budget, and it has one of the finest film scores ever done. While it can feel like it's made up mostly of reaction shots (and they do go on), I can't help but feel it has a bit of magic that the newer films desperately need.
What's everyone's thoughts on the original six movies? I generally find it a tie between 2, 4 and 6 being the best.
